When deciding how much your car insurance premiums will be, your car insurance company will take several factors into consideration. The main ones are as follows…
Driving offences : Essentially, the better your driving record is, the cheaper your car insurance premiums will be. The reason being that there is less chance of you being involved in an accident, and therefore less chance of the insurance company having to pay out. If you have a poor driving record, then it is definitely worth your while putting the time and effort in to making amends for it. The main thing that you can do is drive extra carefully, as the more time that passes between your last offence and your application for cheaper car insurance, the better the chance of it being successful. Signing up for an advanced driving course is also advisable, to show insurance companies that you are serious about being a good, sensible driver from now on.
The make and model of your car : Changing the make and / or model of your car can drastically reduce your insurance premiums. It might seem a drastic step, but your current car could be costing you thousands of extra dollars each year unnecessarily. You want to choose a car that is less likely to be stolen, for example.. If you insist on having a fast, fashionable car, then at least make sure that it has inbuilt safety features, as having those will at least get you some kind of discount on your insurance premiums.
Where you live : Your insurance premiums are affected by how an insurance company rates the city you live in, or even the particular street that you live on. So, living in a particular location may be a benefit or a hindrance when it comes to you car insurance rates. If you live in a low-crime area, and one where there are few car accidents each year, then your car insurance rates will be reduced accordingly. People living in areas classified as ‘high risk’ by insurance companies may well have to pay twice as much as someone living across the other side of the city.
So, if you think that you are paying too much for your car insurance then consider which of those factors is responsible and try to address it. You should let your insurance company know as soon as any positive changes are made in relation to any of these factors. The sooner you tell them, the sooner they will reduce your insurance premiums.
