Each day, drink half your body weight in ounces of filtered or pure water. The many amazing health benefits from plain old water are excessively numerous for me to go into here. Drinking too much of any liquid while eating can dilute your hydrochloric acid, that is so necessary in the digestion of protein and the absorption of acid-based minerals such as calcium and iron. And wait until two hours after you've eaten to drink any more.

Many of us tend to be dehydrated, drinking too little water and too much coffee, tea and caffeinated fizzy drinks. These all tend to dry us out, thanks to the diuretic characteristics of caffeine. If you wait to drink until you actually feel thirsty, you have waited too long: dehydration starts long before we're conscious of it. So make sure you drink at least half your body weight in ounces throughout your day. And do not substitute another fluid, especially during the entire time you're on a body detox. It's water that your body requires. You may be surprised at how much better you feel when this need is finally met.

Water, Water, Everywhere . . .

I wouldn't exactly tell you to avoid bottled water, if only as you need to make your detox as easy you can. But you should be aware that quality-control standards for bottled water are often less rigorous than those for tap water.

'Mineral' waters are tested for 13 chemicals and bacteria - less than a quarter as many substances as tap water. There're also no requirements, as there are for tap water, for mineral waters to be tested daily or even weekly. For 'spring' waters, there is no legislation at all.

So if you are really concerned about high-quality water, your best bet is a home filtration system.
